Online Unit Converters . It is used in counting. Numbers have been used from ancient times, first in the form of tally marks — scratches on wood or bone, and then as more abstract systems. There are several ways of expressing numbers in numeric systems. Some of them are not in use today. Different Ways of Representing Numbers. It is believed by some researchers that the concept of number was created independently in different regions.

The original written representations of numbers through symbols evolved independently, but once trade across countries and continents became widespread, people learned and borrowed from each other and the number systems currently in use were created through collective knowledge. Hindu- Arabic Numerals. The Hindu- Arabic numeral system is one of the most widely used in the world today. It was originally developed in India and improved by the Persian and Arab mathematicians. In the Middle Ages it spread to the Western world through commerce, to replace the Roman numeral system. It was further modified and widely adopted around the world because of the European trade and colonization.

It is a base- 1. 0 system, meaning that it is based on multiples of ten, and that it uses ten symbols to represent all numbers. Ten is a common number to use for counting because people have ten fingers, and body parts were often used for counting historically. Even today people learning to count or who want to illustrate a point about counting in conversation often use fingers. Some cultures also used toes, spaces between fingers, and knuckles for counting. It is curious that numbers are represented by “digits,” the same word that is used to refer to fingers and toes in English and in many other languages. An inscription in Latin and with Roman numerals on Admiralty Arch in London.
It reads: ANNO : DECIMO : EDWARDI : SEPTIMI : REGIS : VICTORI. They are still used today in some contexts, for example on clocks, to represent the hours. Roman numerals are based on seven numbers written with the letters of the Latin alphabet: The order is important in the Roman system because a greater number followed by the smaller means that the two need to be added, but a smaller number in front of the larger one means that the smaller number is subtracted from the larger.
For example, XI is 1. IX is 9. The subtraction rule is not universal, it only works for these numbers: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM. In some cases the subtraction rules are not used, and numerals are written in succession instead.
Systems in Other Cultures. People in many geographic areas had systems of representing numbers, similar to the Roman or the Hindu- Arabic ones. For example, some Slavic people used the Cyrillic alphabet to represent numbers such as 1 to 9, multiples of 1. The Hebrew number system uses the Hebrew alphabet to represent numbers from one to ten, multiples of ten, 1.
The rest of the numbers are represented as multiples or sums. The Greek number system is also similar.
Some cultures use simpler representations, like the Babylonian system, which has only two cuneiform symbols, for one (somewhat resembling to the letter “T”) and for ten (slightly similar to the letter “C”). So for example 3. CCCTT. The Egyptian system was very similar, except that there were additional symbols for zero, one hundred, one thousand, ten thousand, one hundred thousand, and one million, as well as special notations for fractions. Numbers in the Mayan culture had symbols for zero, one, and five, with special notation for numbers above nineteen. Unary numeral system. Tally marks in various cultures.
Unary. The unary system represents each number with the same number of symbols as its value. These symbols are usually the same, therefore if 1 is represented with A, then 5 would be represented as AAAAA. When children learn to count, their teachers often use this system to help create a link between a concrete, easy to understand system and a more abstract representation of numbers.
This system is also sometimes used in games and other simple calculations. Different countries may use different types of representation for this. For example, when keeping score of the winning teams or counting items or days, people in the Western world and some other regions would often write four vertical lines, then cross them with a fifth horizontal line, and repeat the process. For example, in part A) in the picture the person counting reached four, crossed it out, then reached four again, crossed it out, and continued to write tally marks until they added up to twelve.
People who use or have historically used Chinese characters in their writing systems, for example in China, Japan, and Korea use a certain Chinese character with five strokes to do the same. In part B) in the picture the person counts to five, completing the character, and then starts a new character, continuing the count to seven. The stroke order is pre- determined, as shown in the picture. The unary system is also used in computer science. An arithmometer that uses the decimal system and a microprocessor chip that uses the binary system. Positional System.
Positional systems work with a base. For example, in base- 1. First position is for numbers from zero to nine, that is, the number in the first position has to be multiplied by ten to the power of zero. The number in the second position is multiplied by ten to the power of one. The number in the third position is multiplied by ten to the power of two, and so on, until the numbers in all positions are exhausted. To arrive at the final value of the number represented one needs to add all the values at each position.
This is a convenient way of representing numbers because it allows one to work with numbers relatively large in value, without using large space to write them down. Example: 3. 10. 2 = 3 . It is based on two characters, “0” and “1” to represent all possible numbers. In other words it is a base- 2 system. Numbers are represented as follows: 0=0, 1=1, and from 2 the principle of addition is used. Addition in base- 2 is similar to addition in base- 1.
To increment a number by one: An artistic representation of binary numbers. If the number ends in a zero, the last zero is replaced by one: e.
Here the base- 1. If the number ends with a one but is not all ones, the first zero from the right is replaced by one, while all the ones following it on the right become zeros: 1. If the original number is all ones, then they are all changed to zeros, and a one is added at the front: 1. To add two numbers, they are aligned under each other, and for each place, 0+0 produces 0, 1+0 produces 1, and 1+1 produces 1. For example: 1. 11.
In this case, working from right to left: 1+1 produces 0, with one carried over. So, putting this together, we get 1. Subtraction works using the same principle, except instead of carrying over ones, we “borrow” ones. Multiplication is also similar to base- 1. Multiplying by 0 results in a 0, while multiplying 1 by 1 is 1. So, for example: 1. Some of the subsets below partly overlap.
Debt is a negative number. Negative Numbers. Negative numbers are numbers that represent a negative value. A minus sign is placed in front of them. For example if person A has no money and owes 5 dollars to person B, then person A has . Here –5 is a negative number.
Rational Numbers. Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as fractions where the denominator is a natural number that is not zero, and the numerator is an integer. For example both 3/4 and . Some examples are 3, 5, and 1. It contains 1. 7,4. Prime numbers are used in public- key cryptography, a system of encoding data, often used in online secure data exchange, such as in online banking. Interesting Facts about Numbers.
Chinese anti- fraud numbers. Anti- Fraud Numerals. To prevent fraud when writing numbers in business and commerce, Chinese language uses special complex characters that are difficult to forge by adding extra strokes. This is done because the commonly used Chinese characters for numbers are too simple and it is easy to modify their value by adding strokes.
Modern Counting in Commerce. Some languages in countries where base- 1. For example, English has a special word for twelve, “dozen” — currently used mainly for counting eggs, baked goods, wine, and flowers. Khmer has special words based on the ancient base- 2. Numeral Grouping.
Both in China and Japan the Hindu- Arabic numeral system is adopted, but large numbers are grouped by 1. In English, for example, there is a word for 1. Then follows the word million, representing 1,0.
In Japanese there is a word for 1. Unlucky Numbers. Leonardo da Vinci. Many believe that this is carried from the Judeo- Christian tradition, where thirteen was the number of Jesus Christ’s disciples during the last supper, after which the thirteenth disciple, Judas, betrayed Jesus. There was also a superstition among the Vikings that one at a thirteen people gathering will die the next year.
In Russia and many of the former Soviet countries all even numbers are considered unlucky. Possibly this tradition originated from the belief that even numbers are complete, stable and static, unmoving, and thus not alive. Odd numbers, on the other hand, represent change, motion, an entity that needs completion and progression, and life. According to this belief, it is considered bad luck to give an even number of flowers to living people — these numbers are usually reserved for funerals.
In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean- speaking countries number 4 is considered to be unlucky, because it is pronounced the same way as “death.” In some instances all numbers that have a four in them are considered unlucky. For example, a building may not have floors 4, 1. In China number 7 is also unlucky because it represents the spiritual world and ghosts. The seventh month in the Chinese calendar is referred to as the “ghost month,” when the connection between the worlds of the living and the spirits is open.

How to create fillable PDF, form creator, PDF form. Tip – Submitting Forms, How and Why. Form Submit/Email Demystified. Thom Parker, Software Developer/Adventurer, Wind.
Jack Solutions, Inc. Resetting and printing are fairly straightforward and intuitive actions. But form submission is a different kind of animal.
It is among the most convoluted and frustrating of all form features. In this article, I will attempt to demystify the form submission process and make this vital process accessible to even the most non- technical of users. We\'ll cover this process as it relates to PDF forms displayed in Acrobat or Reader, on regular old computer systems (PC or Mac). The techniques and technologies discussed here are not yet available on mobile devices. Why Submit is so different from other form actions. Most form operations happen entirely inside the form environment. For example, a form data reset action only touches the fields on the form.
There are no security issues or implementation difficulties here. It\'s a purely safe and self- contained operation. On the other hand, operations like printing a form require going outside of the form environment- - in this case, to access print drivers on the user\'s computer. Printing is not a very risky operation, but nonetheless it\'s still touching something outside of the form, so Acrobat pops up a warning message letting the user decide whether or not to allow the print. After all, you wouldn\'t want random PDF files printing stuff without your knowledge or control.
There are also potential implementation issues here. For example, there has to be an actual printer hooked up to the system and it has to be turned on. These are things Acrobat has no knowledge or control over, so you can see that even with something as simple as printing, there are potential problems when going outside of the form environment.
Form submission is an entirely different kind of animal from these other operations. It not only has to go outside the form environment, it has to go completely outside the user\'s computer. There are different ways to perform a submit operation, several elements that must be in place to make it work, and many different ways it can go wrong.
PDF Online is a set of free web-based PDF creation and PDF conversion services, powered by the best PDF SDK - API (works with C++, ASP.NET, Java, etc). We create Fillable PDF eForms to help increase workplace efficiency. We convert paper business forms into interactive savable PDF forms. We design Android and iPad PDF forms, mobile.
Foundation Form Creation with Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES. Form creation is key to information processing and forms workflow is a key. Designers and developers who work with Adobe LiveCycle ES or is involved in form.
In addition, nearly all of these things are totally outside of Acrobat\'s control. How form submission works. Data submission is all about getting the form data from the person who fills out the form to the person who manages the form. In the old days, you would use a pen or pencil to fill out an actual paper form and then snail- mail or even physically hand the form over to the person who manages the form. Today, of course, we have many other ways to move form data from place to place.
To submit PDF form data electronically, the form designer adds a submit button to the PDF. Acrobat has both built- in button functionality for performing data submission and a Java. Script function which provides many more options and greater flexibility.
The built- in functionality is also in the official PDF ISO specification. So, ideally it should be implemented in every PDF viewer. That is not quite the case yet, partly because there is no standardization on exactly how the submit operation is implemented. But to continue with Acrobat, in order to perform the submit operation Acrobat needs two pieces of data, a destination and a format in which to transmit the data. Traditionally (in Acrobat/Reader), a PDF form submits data through one of two data- transfer mechanisms, email or HTTP (the standard web page transfer protocol). As such, the submit destination can be either an email address or an URL to a server script.
Both of these submission types have been around for a very long time (since Acrobat 3). Of course, form submission and data handling have never been truly intuitive or easy.
In an attempt to make this task easier for ordinary users, Adobe introduced a Forms Distribution Wizard in Acrobat 8; and in Acrobat/Reader 9, they introduced a third data transfer mechanism- submission to the Acrobat. All these mechanisms attempt to hide the messy technical details from the user.
I\'ll discuss each one in turn. Email submission. Email seems to be by far the most popular way to send form data. It has certainly been written about more than submitting by other means.
Adobe Acrobat PDF form A. Digital signature field C. Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0, or Adobe Reader 7.0.
Here are some links to articles about, or that cover some aspect of email form submission: I\'m sure that email is popular because most people are familiar and comfortable with sending and receiving emails. Anybody who has a computer and an Internet connection already has an email account. This method doesn\'t require any special programming or servers. Ideally, after filling the form, the user simply presses the submit button and the form data is magically attached to an email and delivered back to the form manager, simple and sweet. Unfortunately, it doesn\'t always work out so nicely.
Email submission is the most problematic solution for both ends of the transfer, sending the data on the user side and collecting the data on the receiving end. And here\'s the reason why. Acrobat doesn\'t actually send the email. It hands the email to the operating system, and the system sends the email through the default email client. The default email client is the program you use to send and receive emails. It\'s the one that pops up automatically whenever something happens on your system that has to do with email. Both the Windows and Macintosh operating systems have the ability to register an email program as an operating system service.
Once the email client is registered, any program can use it, and this is exactly what Acrobat is doing. The problem with this approach is that many people do not have the local email client set up, or do not have it set up properly. In many cases, this is because they use a Web- based email service such as Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo mail. Email may seem simple to the user, but it is an awkward topic for a desktop program like Acrobat. So, starting with version 9, Acrobat tried to make email more reliable by giving the user options for saving the form and then manually sending it through the user\'s preferred method (Figure 1).
Not an ideal solution. Figure 1 — Acrobat 9 Email options shown to the user, for forms enabled by the Distribution Wizard. Now, Acrobat/Reader XI has a much better solution. It provides many more options for allowing the user to connect to different types of email services. Figure 2 shows the dialog that Reader XI displays when the end user clicks on a form submit button. Figure 2 — Reader XI provides several email submit choices. Data collection is the other side of data submission.
Once you get the filled forms back in your email inbox, you have to do something with them. Since PDF forms were introduced, Acrobat has always provided some data handling options. But in Acrobat 8, Adobe started adding much more sophisticated options, such as merging form data into a spreadsheet. Figure 3 shows where these options are accessed in Acrobat XI. Figure 3 — Generic options in Acrobat XI for compiling and handling form data Acrobat 8 was also the first version to offer form distribution and a data collection file.
This particular technique has become much more sophisticated in Acrobat XI. The Distribution Wizard can make form data much easier to deal with, at least for simple forms. Here are some articles that discuss dealing with the data on the receiving end of the forms data workflow (Unfortunately there are not many new articles on data collection for Acrobat XI, but not to worry, it\'s pretty much the same as it was in Acrobat 8). When it works, email submission is a very easy and intuitive way to handle form data. However, besides the issue of dealing with users that do not have a proper email setup, it\'s important to keep in mind that handling the return data by email is usually a manual process.
This means that email submission is an inherently low- volume methodology. It\'s actually quite perfect for smaller groups of known users, but for a large number of random users it may be unwieldy, inefficient, and time consuming. HTTP submission. HTTP submission is very similar to how web pages are requested by a web browser. Acrobat packs up the form data, or the entire form, into what\'s called an HTTP Request and then sends it out through the user\'s internet connection. As long as the user has an internet connection, no additional software or setup is needed on the system. This kind of submission is much more reliable and transparent than email.
The HTTP Request is sent to a web server. The server destination that receives the data has to be a program that can extract the form data from the HTTP Request and do something useful with it. Usually, this program is a server script written in one of the common server scripting languages such as Perl, PHP, . Net, Cold. Fusion, Java, etc., but it could also be a custom server designed specifically for handling PDF forms.
Because data is handled automatically by a server, this submission method can easily deal with large quantities of data and is also very flexible. Sever scripts can be written to intelligently handle the data by validating it, automatically transferring it into a database, sending a response back to the user, sending alerts to the forms manager, or any other action necessary for a particular data workflow. The obvious difficulty with HTTP submission is the server- side handling.
Anyone can create a form with email submission for no extra cost. And I mean literally anyone. No technical knowledge necessary. The email infrastructure is well known and already exists for the majority of computer users.
HTTP submission is a completely different animal, someone has to write and install the server- side program. If you want custom functionality, you\'ll need to do it yourself, and this is exactly the path taken by many larger organizations. To make this task a little easier, Cold. Fusion (a server programming language distributed by Adobe) has built- in features specifically for handling PDF forms.
